What Constitutes a Great Firewood?

Wood burning is the oldest and, we believe, ultimately the best method of heating homes during the cold winter months.

There is an array of types of hardwood useful as firewood, and these range in heat value. Some examples used across the globe include elm, hickory, oak, maple, beech, and ash. Not all woods are of equal burning quality, and burning of soft woods should be limited or avoided. Hardwoods, on the other hand, are dense, burn longer, and burn hotter. Resultant fires are less smoky, more efficient, and produce less creosote chimney build up (which is a fire hazard).

The most important factor in determining what makes great firewood is the drying and seasoning process.

Wood that has been cut fresh contains up to fifty percent moisture; this must be seasoned down to no more than twenty five percent prior to burning. Wet, or green wood, has a moisture content of greater than twenty percent and must never be burned in a wood stove or fireplace. Wet wood will steam, bubble or hiss at its ends when it is burnt.

Wet wood, however, is much easier to split than dry wood.

Firewood is becoming an ever more popular choice for Australian home heating. Bush Jarrah is commonly used in the Perth area, as is White Gum.
